Radiology of foot and ankle: New BerlinCaseViewer module

A strong framework around the foot and ankle joint, carrying the load of our entire body weight, ensures that we stand firmly and move around freely through everyday life. Only when walking and standing become painful do we realize how important the feet and joints are for our mobility and stability.

Diseases of the feet and ankles can be very debilitating. It is therefore all the more important to make the correct diagnosis at an early stage in order to be able to draw up a suitable therapy plan.

Lower limb imaging: Is it osteoarthritis or another form of arthritis?

Many inflammatory diseases manifest in the lower extremities. In addition, there are degenerative diseases and complaints due to trauma or overuse. While osteoarthritis is a wear and tear on the joints that exceeds normal age-degeneration, arthritis is an acute disease that often occurs as a result of rheumatic diseases and bacterial infections. Early diagnosis and start of therapy can have a positive effect on the course.

Radiology module to sharpen your eye for these conditions

With the “Ankle & Foot” module, doctors have the opportunity to sharpen their eye for the different conditions. On the basis of twelve cases, Professor Iris Eshed from Israel introduces the systematics of these diseases and shows how they can be differentiated from one another. In the course of this, osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis are compared, whereby rheumatic disease in particular is often difficult to recognize in practice. Tumors are added to the range of differential diagnoses.

The following diagnoses are included in this module:

Arthritis group:

  • Monoarthritis of rheumatic origin
  • Tophaceous gout
  • Long plantar ligament enthesopathy
  • Peripheral spondyloarthritis

Osteoarthritis/trauma:

  • Calcaneonavicular coalition
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Complete tear of the Achilles tendon
  • Haemophilic arthropathy

Tumor group:

  • Synovial chondromatosis
  • Simple bone cyst
  • Giant cell tumor
  • Ewing sarcoma
